How to Be a Perfect House Guest at an Off-Grid Farm

Visiting an off-grid farm can be a unique and fun experience. It allows you to immerse yourself in nature, learn about sustainable living, and connect with like-minded individuals.

Recently a very close friend came to stay in the Campo and not only was great company but instantly slotted into the Campo lifestyle.

However, not all guests are ready to adopt the more alternative lifestyle so here are some essential tips and guidelines to help you be a courteous and enjoyable visitor at an off-grid farm.

1. Prepare

Before embarking on your off-grid farm adventure, it's crucial to do some research and understand the farm's specific needs and requirements. Communicate with your hosts to gain insights into their lifestyle, daily routines, and any specific preparations you need to make. Ask about attire, maybe the evenings are cold or you need stout footwear.

2. Understanding the Off-Grid Lifestyle

Off-grid farms operate independently of public utilities and often rely on renewable energy sources. Familiarise yourself with the basics of off-grid living, such as solar power, composting toilets, and rainwater collection. Luckily the Campo home isn’t quite composting toilets, but we do have certain differences to living on mains supplies like nothing allowed to be flushed if it wasn’t eaten first!

3. Respecting Sustainable Practices

Off-grid farms prioritise sustainability, so it's essential to respect eco-friendly practices. Follow their waste management system, separate recyclables, and dispose of organic waste properly. Minimize your environmental impact by using eco-friendly products and reducing plastic waste.

4. Being Mindful of Energy and Water Usage

Off-grid farms have limited resources, especially energy and water. Be mindful of your energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when not in use. Use water sparingly and take shorter showers. These small actions contribute to the farm's sustainability efforts and mean that the available resources are used properly.

5. Assisting with Farm Chores

Offer your assistance with farm chores, such as tending to the garden, feeding animals, or mending fences. This not only lightens the workload for your hosts but also provides you with a hands-on experience of farm life. Be open to learning and follow instructions carefully.

My recent guest turned out to be a very useful attendant when my horse decided to spear herself on a fence and was really intrigued at how veterinary care differs in the Campo.

6. Showing Appreciation

Express gratitude for the hospitality and opportunity to visit the off-grid farm. Show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of your hosts in maintaining a sustainable lifestyle. A simple thank you can go a long way in fostering a positive and welcoming atmosphere and if you feel it’s appropriate arrive with some wildflower seeds or (region dependant) some Borage seeds for them to plant in their homestead.

7. Maintaining Cleanliness

Keep your living space clean and organised during your stay. Respect the property by cleaning up after yourself and leaving communal areas tidy. This consideration for cleanliness contributes to the overall harmony and well-being of the farm. In the outside areas, always ask the host before assuming that a gate should be closed/open or a water butt refilled.

8. Respecting Wildlife and Nature

Off-grid farms are often nestled in natural surroundings, teeming with wildlife. Respect the local flora and fauna by observing from a distance and refraining from disturbing their habitats. Admire the beauty of nature and embrace the serenity it offers and ask the host what local remedies they have for insect repellent/treatment for bites - they are bound to have answers you aren’t expecting.

9. Following Safety Guidelines

Prioritise your safety and adhere to any safety guidelines provided by your hosts. Familiarise yourself with emergency procedures, potential hazards, and areas that may be off-limits. Your hosts' instructions are crucial for your well-being and the smooth operation of the farm.

10. Engaging in Meaningful Conversations

Engage in meaningful conversations with your hosts and fellow visitors. Take the opportunity to learn about their experiences, sustainable practices, and their motivations for living off-grid. These interactions can deepen your understanding and create lasting connections.

11. Participating in Farm Activities

Embrace the opportunity to participate in farm activities and workshops. Whether it's learning how to harvest crops or engaging in creative endeavours, such experiences enrich your visit and provide valuable insights into the off-grid lifestyle.

12. Adapting to Limited Amenities

Off-grid farms may have limited amenities compared to urban environments. Be prepared to adapt to the absence of certain conveniences and embrace the simplicity of rural living. This flexibility will help you appreciate the farm's unique charm.

13. Expressing Gratitude

Throughout your stay, continue expressing gratitude for the experiences and knowledge gained. Acknowledge the efforts of your hosts in creating a memorable visit and let them know how their sustainable practices have inspired you.

14. Being Open to New Experiences

Approach your stay at an off-grid farm with an open mind and a willingness to embrace new experiences. Step out of your comfort zone, try new activities, and savour the authenticity of rural living. Be open to learning and appreciating the farm's way of life.

Conclusion

Jut do it - embrace the alternatives and see what you may learn too.
